Why do the army use Hummers?
It seems very ineffecient for the army to use hummers. Since they use so much fuel so quickly, for a hummer to run out of fuel In a war zone/battlefield, it would be somewhat counter-productive.
Public Comments
- They replaced Jeeps. They are invaluable to infantry.
- because Hummers are affordable for the US Military budget, and they look cool.
- Hummers replace the jeep. They are not like the ones we see on the streets. Yes they use a lot of fuel, but they are needed to get the job done. The military uses them a lot better then the public use them to tote around the kids and the grocery's.
- It was because the military standard issue Willis Jeep did not have enough space for all the tactical communications equipment required plus the load capacity required. Plus, they were not very good at withstanding mines in the roads and fields.
- Remember the Military Hummer H1 can run on Jet Fuel (JP8) in a pinch but it's main fuel source is diesel Now you say they are ineffecient trust me when you got cases of 7.62 chain linked ammo and 40mm strapped down, all your gear, your communication equipment, a mounted gunner and the need to be able to go basically anywhere there isn't much room in those things Try sitting in the passenger seat in an up armored hummer you have zero leg room
- They do it to annoy you.
- Those things can seriously climb anything. They are very effecient in my opinion. They're not like the pretty'ed up and dumb'ed down versions you see riding around on the streets. They're much stronger
- To support GM and the kick backs they give to politians.
- The Humvee was specifically designed for the battlefield. The Army needed an all terrain vehicle that was capable of carrying a 50MM and the ammo for it. The vehicle needed to be adaptable for troop transport and communications. The military version of the humvee is nothing like the ones available to the commercial market, it's off road capabilities far surpass the ones that you or I could buy (and the comfort level is far less too). Since it was designed for fast ingress and egress from an area, fuel efficiency was not high on the priority list. It only needed to be able to go about 200 miles on a full tank.
- good question, I always wanna learn it the reason .. If u find a decent answer please tell me too. We use rovers and after all years they still are rock .. reliable , diesel , easy to reapir, fuel saver , light ( to move with small planes ) and use full. http://www2.ssm.gov.tr/katalog2007/data/294/images/110_engerek_ozel_harekat_ar.jpg .. like a Hammer .. old but trusty.
