Hummer

should the british army landrover be beefed up like the us army hummer??

maybe a bigger engine or altered for various different terrain.?

  1. It would mean the MOD parting with cash.
  2. More armour plating would seriously over tax the Morris Minor 1000 engine the vehicle is equipped with.
  3. For all the fuss made over it, what is the number of people in Iraq and Afghanistan that have died in these landrovers compared to the US soldiers in hummers? Nothing like it, thats what. The biggest danger facing UK soliders in landrovers is mines. And forgive me if I'm wrong, but when mines are involved, the humvees aren't much of an answer either.
  4. I used to work for Hess O Gara in the states, they are the company that armour plated hummers for US forces based just outside cincinnati in OH The hummer has one massive drawback and that is its size, The landrover is far from perfect but engine wise it outstrips the hummer and off road capability, nothing can go where a landrover can even down to fuel economy in a operation fuel is an absolute consideration of logistics compare the landrover and then the hummer sorry landrover needs improved yes but the hummer would be a backwards step
  5. The MOD would rather waste the money on Humvees than on improving what they have. Poor soldiers. . . .
  6. No. The Lannie is still the best cross-country vehicle available. Don't make it heavier or more cumbersome, you'd only ruin it. Improve a few things, by all means, but don't change the basic vehicle. The Humvee is nothing but an oversized piece of junk, by the way. Too little manoeuvrability, too heavy, bogs in, and typical US Army overkill. Lannies are far better. If you need light armoured vehicles, then get some instead.
  7. U.S. special forces in both conflicts use land rovers and since when did the British Forces use Humvee. There is no defence against mines, mine fields yes.
  8. To answer your question!Yes!The ordinary Land Rover is no good in combating modern Anti-Vehicular weapons!
  9. The landrover is designed to be an all terrain vehicle and manoeuvrable (for a military vehicle). adding armour plating to it would make it much too heavy and cumbersome for rapid attacks - have a look at the SAS spec stripped out ones. what the army needs id dedicated armoured vehicles to go ahead of the LRs into dangerous areas and to a certain extent they are getting them through vehicles such as the Mastiff - they just need a lot more of them.
  10. Humvees are garbage. They are awkward, outdated, constantly require maintenance and are simply not the best thing out there. Check out the MRAP though. A recent addition to the military. Awesome in every respect. Oh and a note: I almost always respect the British choice in gear more than the US. Props on that. Besides the fact I see you guys eyeing my M4 from time to time.
  11. You mean like the Landrover Hotspur which has been in use since 1970 unlike the Humvee which only came into use in 1985? Or the Landrover Shorland, or Simba or Tangi - all in use long before the Hummer was thought of. So somebody in the US obviously asked the question: "why don't we have a beefed up armoured truck like the UK's Landrover Hotspur!"
  12. yes or just buy hummers
  13. There were 2 versions on the landrover used in Northern Ireland - the Snatch which was very lightly armoured and the APV which had much heavier armour - the snatch was used in Iraq - it seems we sold the APVs we had to the Iraqi police - the APV could take a far larger hit than a snatch - madness or what
  14. well the hummer does twice as much fuel for NOT a massive difference in performance or reliabiliy. + the spares issue....so NA!! not realy. just spending money for the look is for fasion parades. not millitary parades.
  15. no point , the land rover is not reliable enough try a toyota land cruiser instead
  16. the army needs money first....
