  1. Safe compared to...? You will never make a bomb-proof vehicle. Even Bradleys that are thicker armored than the Strykers have been blown up pretty easily.
  2. yes, they are nothing like the hummers on the streets. the army hummer is the original hummer
  3. Humvees are not as safe as Strykers by the simple fact that the Stryker is an armored vehicle. Even the "armored-up" Humvees don't have the capability that a Stryker does. However, overall they're safe. It's the environment that they're in that isn't safe.
  4. To be honest , in the modern war ,even in a striker your safety is not guaranteed , the new type of roadside bombs used in Iraq against our troops are able to penetrate a thick Abram armor.....so..a hummer got no chance against it........
  5. An armored Hummer saved my husband's life and the lives of his driver, gunner, and interpreter. They were hit by a roadside bomb and luckily they only had minor injuries. The blast would have killed them all if they had been in a 'regular' hummer or truck. So in short, a Hummer isnt so bad.
  6. The only thing i would want to be in over in Iraq is the MRAP (mine resistant ambush protected) vehicles. They can take almost any bomb blast and keep moving. But the insurgents just adapt and make stronger bombs.
  7. No safer than any other vehicle over there. An IED has destroyed an M1 Abrams tank already. My hummer was hit by an IED and we all made it, minus some hearing, but we made it. I am an MP also, and due to the MOS, you will be put in harms way, but yeah, i would say riding in a hummer is no more dangerous than anything else.
  8. Not the safest of all military vehicles but an up-armored or even a good hillbilly armored one is as safe as can be expected. Coming from experience, any military vehicle struck by a bomb is gonna suck. But with average IEDs the biggest problem will be hearing loss if you're not wearing ear plugs.
  9. Here's the real deal: No vehicle is perfectly safe in combat. The hummer's purpose is speed, utility, maneuverability, and it's a 4X4, light armored vehicle. It beats the hell out of walking or running. Even the Bradly troop vehicle has it's down side too when hit by an RPG and/or a variety of other things. Even tanks can be taken out...So, get real! Ignore the media and idiots: some people don't and that's the problem. Even some troops, those that bitch, moan, and complain about everything, have a lot negative things to say about the hummers and most other combat vehicles with no basis for their complaint...combat is hell...regrettably, people are going to get killed, even some who are riding in tanks. With no intent of being flippant, one must put things into perspective in combat, watch his six, and duck at the appropriate time. One actually needs a crystal ball when you hear "Incoming," and it doesn't hurt to be on the good side of "Lady Luck." When you get the adrenalin rush while under fire you become very aware of everything; kind-of like tunnel vision, however, experience will tell you that "Lady Luck" plays an important roll; except for her, it could have been me on several occasions...combat sucks. You must train the way you fight and you must fight the way you train, and adapt to the cirsumstances. You must depend on your buddies and they on you; it's the key to survival. There's no place for political or moral correctness in COMBAT, and the time for diplomacy and dencency has passed; IT'S A TIME OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION AND COLLATERAL DAMAGE. Speaking from experience (two tours in Nam), it is a fact that those eager for the taste of combat know not its flavor.
  10. We make tougher vehicles, they make bigger and more lethal bombs. The humvees are definetly a lot better than what they used to be.
