- What-ch you talkin' about ?!?
- Its the other way around the hummers are all mouth and no trousers. In the gulf war a SAS patrol in landrovers were on a mission and they came to a deep river crossing where a group of americn soldiers in hummers were stopped because they said the river could not be driven across the SAS knew they had a mission to complete and would not be stopped they used plastic rocket sleeves of some description and made snorkels to fit on the air intakes then just drove straight across without a problem, the americans watched and decided that after all they could cross the river, guess what, the SAS spent the next hour using the landrovers to pull the stricken hummers out of the water.
- both are good vehicles both are fit for the purpose. each design is very good and both have pros and cons.. i have used both and i liked them both. for me its not the budget or the gadgets. its reliability and the rover still out last and it and goes further on fuel. given the choice ill take the land rover
- Philip ask that question in 50 years time your Hummer is no doubt a fine vehicle, but its build and running costs are far higher than a Land Rover and the Land Rover will out last out perform and still be around in another fifty years, will your Hummer, how many Land Rovers are being driven all around the world right now over a million against about 50 thousand Hummers, GB 1 USA 0
- See Korky's answer. I have a series two LR it is 40 years old and still doing a days work on road and on the farm. Forget the gadgets go for economy and reliability. Remember the more gadgets = more to go wrong
- The British Landrover was the result of Britain needing a vehicle similar in performance to the Jeep. During WW2 the Brits got lots of Jeeps as part of the Lend-Lease deal thing. The very first Landrovers were actually quite small and similar in size to the American Jeep of the same WW2 period. An American living down South in the swamplands invented a method of lowering the front of his boat so that goods and horses etc could be quickly and easily loaded up. This was the basics from which the American DD-Landing Craft was based. The Brits again got these from the Yanks as part of the LL-Deal etc. On his return from WW2 my dad wanted to know if they Americans wanted his Tommy Gun back. He had lost it somewhere in a street in France during one of those house to house shoot-outs with the retreating Germans. Take the Liberty Ship as an example. The plans for these ships were already printed up [blue prints] and ready for use by 1940, long before US got into WW2. The fastest built Liberty Ship was done in [I think] 30 days. Thats from keel on up. Brilliant.
- Land Rover and Hummer are two different classes of vehicle. Let's face it the Hummer is basically a truck, much bigger, heavier and fuel inefficient. I believe the US equivalent to the Land Rover is the Ford Mutt. Land Rover however has been built in many different versions, each adapted to serve a purpose or role, but basically the same vehicle doing the job of different vehicles in the US forces. Land Rover has been around now for decades and is still a good vehicle, far more cost effective and easier to maintain. Which is better, this is a difficult question to answer, but I have to go with Land Rover.
- Those 'trashy' 'Hummers' They are called that cos they stink! Gas guzzling crap traps. useful for nothing. The great British vehicle is more fuel efficient and a better work horse by far, as if you need to ask! BRITISH IS BEST!!!!
- In pure terms, the Humvee (military Hummer) is a "weapons carrier" class of vehicle, like the old Dodge WC-50 series, while the Lannie is a jeep-plus. Not the same sort of vehicle. Lannies are reasonably light and have extraordinary cross-country performance; my favourites are the old 1/2 ton parachutable Lightweights we used to have - called the "Commando" by those who know no better. Basically a modern jeep. Goes anywhere. If you strip it down and bang a few GPMGs/MAGs on it, you have a very decent "Sabre" - an SAS-style recce vehicle, as used in South Africa, among other places. The Humvee, on the other hand, is too big, poorly manoeuvrable, and does not have very good cross-country performance - it is simply too heavy. A typical US Forces waste of money.
