- The M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) is a military AWD motor vehicle created by AM General. It has largely supplanted the roles formerly served by the M151 1/4 ton MUTT, the M561 'Gama Goat', their M718A1 and M792 ambulance versions, the CUCV, and other light trucks with the United States military, as well as being used by a number of other countries and organizations. Humvees were originally also referred to as Hummers, though that term was later reserved for a civilian SUV based on the Humvee. In the 1970s, the United States Army concluded that the militarized civilian trucks in use no longer satisfied their requirements. In 1977, Lamborghini developed the Cheetah model to attempt to meet Army contract specifications. In 1979, the Army drafted final specifications for a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HMMWV. In July of that year, AM General (a subsidiary of American Motors Corporation) began preliminary design work, and less than a year later, the first prototype, the M998, was in testing. In June 1981, the Army awarded AM General a contract for development of several more prototype vehicles to be delivered to the U.S. government for another series of tests, and the company was later awarded the initial production contract for 55,000 HMMWVs to be delivered in 1985. HMMWVs first saw combat in Operation Just Cause, the US invasion of Panama in 1989. A US military Humvee deployed in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. A US military Humvee deployed in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The HMMWV has become the vehicular backbone of U.S. forces around the world. Over 10,000 were used during Operation Iraqi Freedom by U.S. forces as well as some other countries during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. One US Humvee was captured by the Yugoslav Army during the Kosovo war and is currently on display in front of the Military Museum building on Kalemegdan Fortress Park, Belgrade, Serbia.
- AM General made the original HummVee about 8/10 years ago General Motors bought the company. H-2,and H-3 are suburbans and Jimmys undernneath.
- That's Humvee. I believe the commercialized Humvees are produced by a different division than the military grade ones are. Even the former "true" Humvees released to the public for sale weren't made on the same line as the military versions, I'm pretty sure. Same Company, just different division. I thought I remembered reading about it somewhere...
- Hummers are made by AM General Corp. in South Bend, Indiana, USA. The M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) is a military AWD motor vehicle created by AM General. GM has acquired the HUMMER brand name and the marketing rights, but not the company which makes them. AMG will continue to manufacture Hummers. GM bought only marketing rights for a civilian version, not the company (AM General) that makes the military ones. The civilian version of the Humvee is a joke. If you've ever seen a military one, they are low, squat and very wide. The civilian versions are narrow and tall and look nothing like the real thing. By comparison, the consumer versions look like tetering skyscrapers. It's typical of Detroit mass marketing to idiot consumers.
- yes, the Orig. "HUMVEE" or Hummer was manufactured By AM General, which has quite obviously been purchased by General Motors (GM). They have kept the orig. design to reproduce the H1. Hope this helps! Lumpy
- AM General, the military subsidiary of American Motors originally made the HMMWV (Hum-Vee) for military use only. Then they started making the Hummer for civilian use. General Motors then bought the rights to Hummer and came out with their own H2 and H3. They also renamed the original Hummer the H1. Now AM General is contracted by GM to make the Hummers. So yes, Hum-Vees and Hummers are made by the same people, AM General. GM also produces the H2 in South Africa for international sales.
- Who cares - unless your talking about the non civilian HMMR unit. All this H1 - H2 - H3 makes me sick. I have several friends that have owned these newer hummers.and they are all overpriced could have got a Silverado 4x4 and a S10 for that price. I take my ford places they got stuck. We have ridden them hard and put them away beat. They cant take the same abuse that a 72 Ford gets on a more regular basis.
- AM General.
